There are definitely different components to church life. These range from formal/public to informal/private. All are necessary and part of building up the church.
On one end of the spectrum is the formal/public ministry of the church. This mainly takes place during "official" church meetings. Here 1 Timothy 4:13 is applied: "Devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching." (Also 2 Timothy 4:2)
In the middle of the spectrum is ministry of the church which comes home. Acts 20:20 comes to mind. "You know that I have not hesitated to preach anything that would be helpful to you but have taught you publicly and from house to house." (Also Acts 2:46 and Hebrews 10:24-25)
Then there is the really informal and private ministry of the church. "We loved you so much that we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well, because you had become so dear to us" (1 Thessalonians 2:8). This can also be reference in Matthew 3:31-35; John 19:25-27; Romans 12:13; Galatians 6:1-2; Colossians 3:13-16; Titus 2:3-5; and James 5:16.
The application here is this: is the church ministering in all of these ways, not only publicly but also privately, the point of sharing life on such a deep level?
